(B)DSM-5: The Clinicalization of Kinky Practices
The current edition of the DSM classifies two common sets of BDSM behavior sadism and masochism as disorders. One of the primary defining criteria for these disorders is that a client feels shame about their desires and paraphilias. However is the shame truly something that should be clinicalized or is it a result of a society that shames those that are different? In some places adults cannot consent to BDSM practices or even sex practices. BDSM is often illegal named as an inability to consent to “assault” and for some something as “basic” as anal sex could be a criminal offense.. How can we as helping professionals and clinicians support our clients in a society that stigmatizes consenting adult relationships? In this class we'll discuss the reasons behind the stigmatization, the criteria which labels BDSM practices as a disorder, and better ways to work with clients in the BDSM community.
